15 anti-dark spot serums that brighten the skin and even out skin tone

“Cosmetics with glycolic acid, retinol and other powerful active ingredients can prevent and reduce dark spots.”

But what exactly is a spot? “When we talk about spots, we are referring to a change in the coloration of the skin without thickening, elevation or scaling of the skin; that is, the skin remains flat in that place and what has changed is the color. "When they are smaller than one centimeter they are called macules and when they are larger than that size they are called spots," explains Dr. Javier Pérez Diez, aesthetic doctor at Clínica Premium Marbella.

I'm sure that now that this long summer is over, you've noticed a few spots in the mirror that you didn't have before beach season started. And the sun is one of the biggest factors in their appearance. Dr. Javier Pérez Diez explains why spots occur and what the three main causes of this change in color are. “Due to an increase in the amount of blood that reaches that area (erythematous spots), due to the rupture of capillaries with extravasation of blood (purpuric spots) or due to the deposition of melanin, the pigment that produces tanning (sunspots),” he explains.

Besides being different, some spots are also easier to remove than others. “When this pigment is located in a small area of the skin, we call them sunspots, associated with aging and exposure to ultraviolet rays. These types of spots are located above the layer where melanin is produced and are usually epidermal spots, which makes them relatively easy to remove, unlike pigmented spots such as melasma or post-inflammatory spots, in which the pigment is located deep in the dermis.”, adds Dr. Pérez Diez.
