Physical exercise is one of the most effective ways to help prevent and improve the appearance of varicose veins. In addition, it's important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle habits. Below, we share 5 simple exercises you can do daily at home to improve circulation and reduce discomfort associated with varicose veins:
- Leg rotations: Lying on the floor or bed, lift one leg and make small clockwise circles. Repeat with the other leg. At your own pace, try to do 10 to 15 circles with each leg.
- Bicycle in the air: Lying on a yoga mat or in bed, raise your legs and simulate pedaling a bicycle in the air. This exercise promotes venous return and activates circulation.
- Heel-to-toe push-ups: Sitting with your heels on the floor, raise your toes. Then lower your toes and raise your heels. Repeat this movement 15 to 20 times to improve circulation in your legs.
- Foot stretch: Lying on your back in bed or on the floor with your legs extended, flex your toes forward and backward. Repeat the exercise approximately 10 times.
- Walking on tiptoes or heels: Alternate walking on your toes and heels for a few minutes. This exercise helps activate the calf muscle pump.
These exercises are excellent for improving venous return, stretching and toning the calf muscles, and preventing muscle spasms. They also help improve blood circulation and reduce cramps and the feeling of heaviness in the legs.
