What does bichectomy involve?
Bichectomy, also known as buccal liposuction, involves the removal of the Bichat fat pads located in the cheeks. This procedure helps to sculpt the face and define the cheekbones, resulting in a more defined and harmonious lower third of the face.
The buccal fat pads, known as Bichat's fat pads, are located beneath the muscles of the lower cheeks. Their size varies from person to person, regardless of body weight. Generally, a larger volume of these pads is hereditary and does not decrease with diet or exercise.
How is a bichectomy performed?
Bichectomy is a minor surgical procedure intended to remove buccal fat from the cheeks.
First, local anesthesia is applied. Then, the surgeon makes small incisions of approximately 3 millimeters inside the cheeks, through which the Bichat fat pads, roughly the size of a walnut, are removed.
Finally, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. The procedure is similar to a dental procedure, as it is performed with the mouth open and without visible external incisions.
Facts about bichectomy:
- Type of intervention: Quick surgical procedure lasting between 20 and 30 minutes
- Postoperative: Antibiotics and medicated mouthwash are prescribed to prevent infections
- Sick leave: Usually minimal, from one to a few days
- Recovery: Inflammation similar to that experienced after dental treatment may occur.
- Results: Permanent and without visible scars, as it is performed inside the mouth
What is the recovery like after a bichectomy?
Because the incisions are made inside the mouth, it is recommended to follow a soft diet and avoid very hot or spicy foods or drinks for at least 24 hours.
During the first few days, it's common to experience swelling in the treated area. To reduce this and relieve discomfort, it's recommended to apply cold compresses regularly to the cheeks. Drinking cold water may also help.
When are the results of a bichectomy noticeable?
It's normal for the face to appear fuller during the recovery process due to initial swelling. However, the final results can be seen between one and three months after the procedure, once the tissues have settled and the skin has adapted to the new facial contour following the fat removal.
