How to lift droopy eyelids (beyond surgery)

“The desire for a more open-eyed appearance has made blepharoplasty the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for people over 45. However, there are other solutions to avoid or postpone the procedure, from makeup and cosmetics to massages and in-salon treatments.‘

The allure of a well-defined, droopy eyelid, à la Lauren Bacall, has become a thing of the past in the art of seduction because today, what truly captivates is an open gaze. The Spanish Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (SECPRE) indicates in its latest report that blepharoplasty, or eyelid lift, ranks second among the most frequently performed procedures, only surpassed by breast augmentation, and tops the list of surgeries for those between 45 and 60 years old. Social media is rife with tutorials designed to lift sagging eyelids using eyeliner, facial yoga, or gua sha massage. Because there are details that give the face a tired appearance, and along with nasolabial folds and marionette lines, there is, without a doubt, droopy eyelids, or dermatochalasis, as it is known in the medical world.

The expression "droopy eyelids" is a colloquial term that people use to refer to excess skin. “It looks like a droopy eyelid, but it’s actually excess skin because the eyelid margin isn’t actually lowered or drooping. When this happens, it’s a different problem known as ptosis, and it can cause vision problems. Excess skin is also associated with a drooping eyebrow, so all factors need to be considered,” says Dr. Javier Pérez Diez, cosmetic physician at Clínica Premium Marbella.

The definitive treatment is blepharoplasty, which is an outpatient surgery performed under local anesthesia that removes excess skin with subsequent suturing. “In some cases, we also remove a fat deposit that accumulates near the nasal area, but the operation lasts about half an hour and recovery is quick. The stitches are removed after seven days and the patient can resume normal activities. The results last for five to ten years; and sometimes they last a lifetime,” explains Dr. Pérez Diez.. For those who do not want surgery, or are in the early stages, there is an arsenal of non-surgical options that can improve the appearance of the eyelids.

Eye drops

UPNEEQ is the new FDA-approved eye drops that offer a temporary solution for lifting the eyelids. […] Many similar drops are available on the market; the difference is that UPNEEQ has been designed to lift the eyelids. Its effects last only a few hours and may cause redness, dry eyes, or blurred vision. One drop is applied daily to each eye, and the effect is noticeable after about 15 minutes. It must be prescribed by a doctor, and its price is high because it is the only one of its kind on the market. Dr. Javier Pérez Diez of Clínica Premium Marbella points out, “This eye drop contains oxymetazoline, a sympathetic nervous system stimulant approved for eyelid elevation in cases of ptosis, when the eyelid droops due to illness or treatment. It produces a temporary effect and does not act on excess skin. In my opinion, it should not be used for cosmetic purposes.”.
