Why is a peel the best treatment to have done in winter?

What is a chemical peel?

The term peeling means "to peel" or "to flake off." A chemical peel involves the controlled application of a substance to the skin to gradually remove superficial layers, with the aim of stimulating subsequent regeneration.

This chemical exfoliation helps improve the aged or damaged skin surface, helping to reduce or diminish wrinkles, scars, blemishes, and acne marks, among other skin imperfections.

How is a chemical peel performed?

The procedure is carried out by the controlled application of keratolytic substances, usually acids such as glycolic, salicylic, pyruvic, trichloroacetic acid or phenol, among others.

This process causes progressive peeling during the following days, leading to the appearance of new skin.

It is an outpatient treatment, simple and quick to apply, indicated to address a wide variety of skin disorders.

Types of peels and results

According to the depth of treatment, they are classified into very superficial peels (which are suitable for home use) and superficial, medium and deep peels for medical management.

The greater the depth, the more layers reached, the better the result; however, the skin recovery time is longer and there may be a risk of complications.

Post-peeling care

During skin regeneration, it is essential to follow specific care, as the skin temporarily loses part of its barrier function and becomes more sensitive to dehydration and external agents.

For superficial peels, soothing and moisturizing creams are recommended for two or three days.

In medium or deep peels, gentle cleansers are used along with specific creams containing antibiotics and, in some cases, corticosteroids. Sun protection should begin as soon as possible after the skin has re-epithelialized.

Indications and contraindications

It is indicated for patients who want to improve some aspect of their skin, who understand the procedure and the expected results.

It should be avoided in patients with infectious or inflammatory skin processes or with a tendency to produce keloids or hyperpigmentation.

Price of chemical peel

The cost of treatment can vary considerably. Basic medical peels can start from around €100, while deep peels, which require more complex conditions and even hospitalization, can cost significantly more.

Why is winter the best time to get a peel?

One of the risks associated with this type of treatment is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, that is, the appearance of spots in areas where the skin has undergone a regeneration process.

This condition is exacerbated by sun exposure. Therefore, having peels done during the winter months or during periods of lower solar radiation helps reduce the risk of this complication.
